Research Topic
Research interests: modern Japanese history from the late Tokugawa to the Meiji period; global intellectual history in the nineteenth century; transnational history of East Asia, Europe and North America; translation; conceptual history; history of humanitarianism and human rights
Through a biographical analysis of a Japanese individual who established networks with social scientists and humanitarians in the UK and the US in the late nineteenth century, my research focuses on how the idea of equality developed across different languages and cultures in that period. In doing so, I aim at providing a non-Eurocentric view on global intellectual history.
